Monster Bash
Monster Bash, released by Apogee Software in 1993, is a side-scrolling platform game with a spooky yet humorous twist. Players control Johnny Dash, a young boy armed with a powerful slingshot, who ventures into creepy graveyards, haunted castles, and eerie dungeons to rescue kidnapped pets from the clutches of sinister monsters. The gameplay combines fast-paced platforming with light puzzle elements. Each stage is filled with hidden passages, traps, and an assortment of ghoulish enemies, from skeletons to zombies. The slingshot serves as both a weapon and a tool to break obstacles, giving players multiple ways to approach the dangers scattered throughout the levels.
Known for its detailed EGA graphics, atmospheric music, and surprisingly dark tone for a shareware platformer, Monster Bash became a standout title in Apogee’s catalog. Its blend of challenging action and gothic charm earned it a devoted following among MS-DOS gamers of the early ’90s.
