Crystal Caves
Crystal Caves, released in 1991 by Apogee Software, is a colorful side-scrolling platform game starring the quirky space prospector Mylo Steamwitz. Always on the lookout for a quick profit, Mylo ventures into a series of dangerous caves on distant planets, seeking valuable crystals while dodging traps and alien creatures. Each level presents a self-contained puzzle of hazards, enemies, and collectibles. Players must carefully time jumps, shoot obstacles, and plan their routes to gather all the crystals before reaching the exit. The game’s mix of fast reflexes and thoughtful problem-solving gave it more depth than a standard run-and-gun platformer.
With its bright EGA graphics, catchy AdLib music, and trademark Apogee humor, Crystal Caves became a well-loved shareware title of the early 1990s. Its lighthearted tone, challenging stages, and charming protagonist ensured it a lasting place in the library of classic DOS platformers.
