Classic MS-DOS Horror Games

Horror games on MS-DOS proved that pixel art and limited sound hardware could still produce genuine dread. Alone in the Dark — widely regarded as the first survival horror game — delivered tension and atmosphere in 1992 that modern horror titles still aspire to. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream adapted Harlan Ellison's disturbing short story into an unforgettable adventure. Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Sanitarium and the early Resident Evil precursors showed that horror could be a legitimate genre on PC. DOS horror games rewarded patience and punished recklessness.
