Rise of the Triad
Rise of the Triad, released in 1995 by Apogee Software, is a fast-paced, over-the-top first-person shooter that builds on the legacy of Wolfenstein 3D with more weapons, mayhem, and mid-'90s attitude. Players take on the role of a member of the HUNT (High-risk United Nations Taskforce) as they battle a fanatical cult hell-bent on global domination. The game features frenetic gunplay across sprawling levels filled with traps, secrets, and a variety of bizarre enemies. What sets Rise of the Triad apart is its arsenal of outrageous weapons—including heat-seeking missiles and flame walls—as well as its unique features for the time, such as jumping pads, destructible objects, and gory “ludicrous gibs.”
Praised for its fast action, tongue-in-cheek style, and ambitious use of an enhanced Wolfenstein 3D engine, Rise of the Triad delivers a wild, unapologetically violent shooter experience. It remains a cult classic that helped define the "anything goes" spirit of mid-'90s PC gaming.
