Millennium: Return to Earth
Millennium: Return to Earth is a 1989 MS-DOS strategy and resource management game developed by Software Studios and published by Electric Dreams Software. Set in a distant, post-apocalyptic future, it places the player in command of humanity’s last remaining survivors, forced to rebuild civilization after a catastrophic event has rendered Earth uninhabitable. From a modest lunar outpost, players must manage limited resources, maintain life support systems, and gradually expand into space. The core gameplay revolves around exploration, expansion, and logistical planning across the Solar System. Players research technologies, construct spacecraft, mine resources from planets and moons, and establish new colonies. Each decision has long-term consequences, as maintaining a stable supply chain becomes increasingly complex while new threats emerge beyond Earth’s orbit. The game is often noted for its layered strategic depth and its emphasis on careful resource balancing rather than fast-paced action.
As the campaign progresses, the scope broadens significantly, introducing hostile forces and larger-scale interplanetary conflicts that challenge the survival of human colonies. Despite its minimalist presentation typical of late-1980s DOS titles, the game builds a strong sense of progression and tension through systems-driven storytelling. It is frequently remembered as a precursor to Deuteros: The Next Millennium, refining ideas that would later be expanded into an even more complex space management experience.
