Abuse
Abuse, released in 1996 by Crack dot Com, is a side-scrolling action game that blends fast-paced shooting with atmospheric sci-fi horror. Players control Nick Vrenna, a prisoner in a high-security facility where a genetic experiment has gone terribly wrong. The outbreak transforms inmates into deadly mutants, and Nick must battle his way through the complex to stop the infection from spreading. The game is notable for its innovative control scheme: while movement is handled by the keyboard, the mouse is used to aim weapons independently in any direction. This system provided a level of precision and intensity rare in side-scrollers of its era. Along the way, players encounter a wide arsenal of weapons and face relentless hordes of enemies across sprawling, maze-like levels.
With its dark, oppressive atmosphere, detailed sprite graphics, and frantic combat, Abuse stood out as a unique twist on the action-platformer genre. Its shareware release helped it gain a strong following, and the game remains remembered as one of the more inventive and challenging DOS shooters of the mid-1990s.
