Eye of the Beholder III: Assault on Myth Drannor
Eye of the Beholder III: Assault on Myth Drannor is a first-person dungeon-crawling role-playing game released for MS-DOS in 1993 by Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI). The third and final entry in the original Eye of the Beholder trilogy, it is based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules and takes place in the Forgotten Realms setting. Unlike its predecessors, which were developed by Westwood Associates, the third installment was created internally at SSI.Following the events of The Legend of Darkmoon, the heroes are approached by a mysterious stranger who asks them to travel to the ruined elven city of Myth Drannor. There they must confront the lich Acwellan and recover a powerful artifact known as the Codex. The adventure leads the party through forests, ancient ruins, a mausoleum, a mage guild and a temple, with undead creatures and other dangerous enemies standing in their way.
Gameplay retains the series’ characteristic real-time, grid-based exploration and combat from a first-person perspective, while introducing several refinements. These include an “All Attack” command, the ability to use polearms from the second rank, outdoor areas, and a selection of new high-level monsters, spells and equipment. Players can create a new party or continue with characters from the previous game, making Assault on Myth Drannor a suitably challenging conclusion to SSI’s classic AD&D dungeon-crawling trilogy.
