Raven Software was founded in 1990 and built their reputation developing games on id Software's engines. Using the Doom engine they created Heretic in 1994 and Hexen: Beyond Heretic in 1995 — dark fantasy shooters that significantly expanded what the engine could do. They later collaborated with id on Quake mission packs and developed Jedi Knight II.
